Things Fall Apart1 essays
Things Fall Apart1 essays The Ibo society in Africa is very different from the American society that I am used to. One of the major differences is the way women are treated. On page 37 of Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo conveys that no matter how prosperous a man was, if he was unable to rule his women and children (and especially his women) he was not really a man. On page 94 Okonkwos uncle says we all know that a man is the head of the family and his wives do his bidding. This shows us that women in the Ibo society are considered subservient to the men of the society and are sometimes mistreated, however they are still very important to society. This is evident in many other places throughout the book Things Fall Apart. The way women are referred to in the book tells about their social standing as well. Many times women are referred to by their relationship to a man. There are many references to Nyowes mother and Okonkwos first wife, but Ekwefi is seldom called by her name. The same goes with the wife of Ogbuefi Udo who was murdered by the members of another African village near Umofia. In the first chapter of the book we see how women are expected to do what their husbands say with no questions asked. When Ikemefuna comes to Umofia and is put under Okonkwos care he (Okonkwo) immediately calls for his first wife and says look after him, when she asks a question regarding the boy, Okonkwo says do what you are told woman to which his first wife responds by taking Ikemefuna into her hut, asking no more questions. The only two women who are consistently referred to by their name throughout the book are Ezinma and Chielo. That is because Ezinma is very special to her father, Okonkwo, and Chielo is the priestess of the oracle. On pages 122 and 123, Okonkwo thinks to himself that Ezinma is special because of all hi...

The History of Fathers Day
The History of Fathers Day Fathers Day is held on the third Sunday in June to celebrate and honor fathers.à And while the first Mothers Day was celebrated in 1914 after President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation making Mothers Day the second Sunday in May,à Fathers Day did not become official until 1966.à The Story of Fathers Day Who invented Fathers Day? While there are at least two or three different people credited with that honor, most historians consider Sonora Smart Doddà of Washington State to be the first person to have proposed the holiday in 1910. Dodds father was a Civil War veteran named William Smart. Her mother died giving birth to her sixth child, which left William Smart a widower with five children to raise on his own. When Sonora Dodd married and had her own children, she realized what a tremendous job her father had done in raising her and her siblings as a single parent. After hearing her pastor give a sermon about the newly established Mothers Day, Sonora Dodd suggested to him that there should also be a Fathers Day and proposed that the date be June 5, her fathers birthday. However, her pastor needed more time to prepare a sermon, so he moved the date to June 19, the third Sunday of the month. Fathers Day Traditions One of the early ways established to celebrate Fathers Day was to wear a flower. Sonora Dodd suggested wearing a red rose if your father was still livingà and wearing a white flower if your father was deceased. Later, presenting him with a special activity, gift, or a card became commonplace. Dodd spent years campaigning for Fathers Day to be celebrated nationally. She commissioned the help of mens goods manufacturers and others who might benefit from a Fathers Day, such as the makers of ties, tobacco pipes, and other products that would make for a suitable gift for fathers. In 1938, a Fathers Day Council was founded by the New York Associated Mens Wear Retailers to help with the widespread promotion of Fathers Day. Still, the public continued to resist the idea. Many Americans believed an official Fathers Day would be just another way for retailers to make money since the popularity of Mothers Day boosted the sale of gifts for mothers. Making Fathers Day Official As early as 1913, bills had been submitted to congress to recognize Fathers Day nationally. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson pushed to make Fathers Day official, but couldnt muster enough support from Congress. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidgeà would also recommend that Fathers Day be observed, but did not go so far as to issue a national proclamation. In 1957, Margaret Chase Smith, a senator from Maine, wrote a proposal that accused Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while only honoring mothers. It wasnt until 1966 thatà President Lyndon Johnsonà finally signed a presidential proclamation that made the third Sunday of June, Fathers Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon made Fathers Day a permanent national holiday. Whatà Gifts Fathers Want Forget about snazzy ties, cologne, or car parts. What fathers really want is family time. According to a Fox News report, About 87 percent of dads would rather have dinner with the family. Most fathers dont want another tie, as 65 percent said they would rather get nothing than another tie. And before you go running out to buy mens cologne, only 18 percent of dads said they want some kind of personal care product. And only 14 percent said they want automotive accessories.

Toyota Foundation in Toyota Motor Corporation Essay
Toyota Foundation in Toyota Motor Corporation - Essay Example Through the visits to the US and Europe, and the research that he carried out, Kiichiro Toyoda gained a lot of insight and knowledge about automobile production. In 1933, the Toyota Automatic Loom Works Ltd established the Toyoda automobile department. This led to the creation TMC in 1937 as a separate and independent company, with Kiichiro Toyoda as its president (Toyota Motor Corporation 1). Before becoming a separate and independent company in 1937, TMC had already produced and sold its first standard passenger car, the AA sedan, in 1936. TMC got its logo from a public competition held in September 1936, in which participants were required to design the best logo. Toyoda then changed its name to Toyota, trademarked its new name, and registered itself as the TMC in August 1937. TMC officially began its commercial production of vehicles at the Honsha plant in 1938. From September 1947, it sold its small-sized vehicles under the name ââ¬Å"Toyopetâ⬠. The company focused on truck production during World War 2 for the Japanese army. Japan was hit by serious financial difficulties after World War 2. For this reason, TMC faced a financial crisis in 1949 that brought it to the brink of bankruptcy (Toyota Motor Corporation 1). During the financial crisis that the company faced, it only produced 300 trucks in 1950, and almost went out of business. To deal with the financial crisis, a consortium of banks lent TMC a loan to revamp itself. On obtaining the loan, the company began eliminating excess workers through layoffs and reduction of wages. In 1950, the company started the Toyota Motor Sales Company that lasted only until 1982 because it was merged with the TMC. Toyota launched the Crown Deluxe, Toyopet Master, and Toyopet Crown in 1955 (Toyota Motor Corporation 1). In 1950, Kiichiro Toyoda resigned as the president of TMC. Taizo Ishida took over the companyââ¬â¢s presidency and was credited for focusing his efforts on investing in equipment. One such example wasà when he led the establishment of the Motomachi plant.

Employment Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Employment Law - Essay Example Based on the reported facts, at the onset before Tanya was actually hired by your company, she already concealed a material information prior to her employment, which was her medical condition as she suffered from Trigeminal Neuralgia. Her present medical condition constrained her to report to daily to work if she is suffering an attack. Clearly, your company is already experiencing losses due to her absences. The constant conflict between Brian and Tanya must be resolved by the employer. Brianââ¬â¢s act of falsely accusing Tanya as ââ¬Å"uselessâ⬠and not being capable of carrying out her job already constitutes as a form of harassment (Isle of Wight Tourist Board v Coombes [1976] IRLR 413). As the boss of both Brian and Tanya, you are expected to resolve the friction between the two employees and to stop any form of harassment and to make sure to avoid it from happening again in the future. On the issue of incompetency of Tanya, it was recently discovered that she committe d major blunders in the company while she was still an employee because the banking records are inaccurate and whatââ¬â¢s worse is that she even misappropriated a sum of money since the petty cash fund is short by a ?100, which was under her custody while she was still an employee. This is a gross misconduct on her part and considered as stealing money from the company. I. ANALYSIS Under the law, a constructive dismissal case will only prosper if it satisfies the requirements provided under the law. The Employee Rights Act of 1996 of Section 95(c) provides that the employee terminates the contract under which he is employed with or without notice in circumstances in which he is entitled to terminate it without notice by reason of the employerââ¬â¢s conduct (Employee Rights Act: 1996). In these circumstances, the employerââ¬â¢s behaviour constitutes a repudiation of the contract and the employee accepts the repudiation by resigning (Lewis 2009, p.210). In the case at bar, Ta nya informed the employer that she is no longer reporting to work because of the verbal conduct of Brian against her. Here, it is not the employerââ¬â¢s conduct or behaviour which forced Tanya to resign, but was caused by Brianââ¬â¢s verbal abuse on her. In all fairness to you as the employer, you made reasonable efforts to prevent the harassment from happening again by telling Brian to stop the verbal abuse on Tanya. However, Brian was still not able to resist throwing invectives against Tanya in the workplace. The day after her last fight with Brian, she immediately filed the case without going through mediation. On the other hand, under the Protection from Harassment Act of 1997, a person must not pursue a conduct (a) which amounts to harassment of another and; (b) which he knows or ought to know amounts to harassment of another (Protection from Harassment Act: 1997). Clearly, Brian is guilty of verbally abusing Tanya every time he accuses her of incompetence in from of peo ple in the office (Cortaulds v Andrew [1979] IRLR 85 ). Thus, this instance will fall as harassment on the part of Brian. As a general rule, the employer is liable for the acts of its employees under the principle of vicarious liability. However, the employer can avoid liability for discriminatory harassment if they can prove that they took such steps that were reasonably practical to prevent harassment from occurring. Furthermore, individual employees may also be liable, for

Stubblefield 1 Marlene Stubblefield Dr. Judith Palier American National Government 17 November 2013 The Second Amendant: What does it mean? As violence and murder rates escalate in America so does the issue of gun control. The consequence of this tragedy births volatile political discourse about gun control and the Second Amendment. The crux of the question is what the founding fathers meant when they wrote, ââ¬Å"A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.â⬠Since the writing of the Second Amendment the make and model of firearms has changed dramatically and so has the philosophies of the people. A rifle is no longer defined as a single shot, muzzle-loading musket used to primarily protect families or solely for food. Should the weapons we use today be protected by an amendment written nearly 222 years ago? Should the second amendment be rewritten? Does the Second Amendment apply to individual citizens? These questions spark extensive debates in Washington D.C. regarding what the founding fathers intended t he amendment to be. The answer to this question lies in the fact that despite hundreds of gun control articles having been written , still the gun control issue remains unresolved. History tells us gun control debates will be in a stalemate until our judicial system defines or rewrites the Second Amend. This paper will examine the history of the Second Amendment, and attempt to define the framers intent, gun control legislation and look at factors that affect Americans on this specific issue... ...o militias, and dismissed his lawsuit. Heller perused his lawsuit; the matter was appealed and sent to the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. The Court of Appeals reversed the lowers court decision based on reasons the Second Amendment clearly mentions an individual may bear arms while serving in the militia, and the same individual has a right protect himself and his family as sacrosanct. The court concludes that the cityââ¬â¢s ban on handguns and its requirement that firearms in the home be kept nonfunctional violated that right. In other words, an individual need not be in a militia to own a firearm, it is an individualââ¬â¢s right to own a firearm in self -defense. Heller concluded his defense by saying, ââ¬Å"self-defense is a basic right recognized by ancient legal system to present, and it is the central component of the Second Amendmentâ⬠(D.C. v Heller).

Case Studies Aileen R. Arias MKT 500 ââ¬â Marketing Management Sections A International American University Professor Mara Murphy MBA Management -2017 Fall 2 Title Coca-Cola According to the source the word means of Coca-Cola was from a Dutch phrase that had two meaning Ik Ook translates to Me Too and Op Stap translates to Move On. The invention of the popular drink since 1886 came from the curiosity of an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. The company advertise in overseas and all of the poster campaign are not the same they choose carefully what should the theme as their advertisements before broadcasting it to the media. Review/Analysis of the Case Analysis of Findings The extraordinary ways of a good campaign of Coca-Cola had considered not only the brand, but the music that gives the slogan provided a simple, direct way to communicate about the product. Through the year of 1906, its theme The Great National Temperance Beverage reflected a time when the society in the United States was veering away from alcoholic beverages, and Coca-Cola provided a nice alternative. It is Jingle had concerned the sales figures, such as from a Three Million a Day from 1917 or Six Million a Day from 1925. Further views upon the ways of drinks a day, had difference from the one billion a day mark TheCoca-ColaCompany passed in 1997. Variation of advertisement forCoca-Colts concentrated on th e quality of the product, Either ways of its refreshing taste or even its role in entertaining, as in 1948s Where Thereââ¬â¢s Coke Thereââ¬â¢s Hospitality. Into way back of the year 1985 into the introduction of a new taste of Coca-Cola (commonly called new Coke ) and the reintroduction of Coca-Cola classic and the original formula led to multiple slogans. Its featured Americas Real Choice, while by the year 1986, two slogans were used to differentiate the brands, from with the colors Red, White You forCoca-Cola classic and Catch the Wave forCoca-Cola. In the ways of reselling themselves for increase the level of memorable slogans. In hence from the year 1971 Hilltop ad featured a song with the words Id Like to Buy the World a Coke. Almost that wasnââ¬â¢t an actual slogan (the ad, in fact, was part of the Its the Real Thing campaign), the beautiful ad and song lyrics are still so well known today that the lyrics are considered a slogan to many. Furthermore years to January 2003, its recent campaign forCoca-Cola was introduced Coca-Cola Real. The ways it turns out to be (and slogan in turn) reflects a genuine, authentic feel into the life and the natural roleCoca-Coldplay in them. Summary and Conclusions The Company Coca-Cola had great deal of success regarding upon the campaign became a unique ways of marketing to billions of people around the world. As the social impact came a uplifting global campaigns that translates well into different overseas, languages, and cultures. It becomes a deal of companies to help as well income growth of ones countries to their people regarding employment. Because of a great deal of success of Coca-cola they try to copy and compete with them example the Pepsi company but they end up to be failure, I think and believe that a genuine ways and trend-setting of the company like Hansen Beverage Company (Monster Energy) could surpass Coca-Cola in the American Market and possibly change of game plan in the global market. Likewise, to Coke, Monster Energy Company was alert to keep up the changing times all while developing a premium product tied with a strong market, they are able to expand their product mix offering energy drinks, tea, coffee, sports drinks, also it goes to recently naturally flavored sparkling spring water. Movie Review The Fault Of Love - 1610 Words
Most romance movies will follow the generic Hollywood formula of love. The Hollywood formula consists of ââ¬Å"boy wants girl, girl rejects boy, boy persists and boy gets girl.â⬠When this formula is expressed in so many movies, it teaches young boys that if you keep persisting, it will eventually pay off and get you want you want. It teaches people to be stubborn and controlling in the hopes of proving their love. As stated in DeBeckers, 1997, ââ¬Å"Persistence only proves persistence; it does not prove love.â⬠The Hollywood formula of love is expressed in the movie The Fault in Our Stars by John Green which is a movie about a teenage romance affected by real problems. The story is about the main character Hazel Grace, who is trying to live a normalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Hazel was already lonely, facing depression and needed someone to talk to so she seemed easily approachable. Augustus continues to stare at her during the whole time using this to ââ¬Å"charmâ⠬ her before he even said anything. When they both left the building, she was waiting outside for her ride when he approaches her and smiles widely. Smiling is one of the best ways to prove you are a friendly person and Augustus did it on purpose. As stated in DeBecker, 1997, ââ¬Å"a smile is a typical way to mask true emotionsâ⬠. Augustus continues to have small talk with Hazel and after talking to her for a while, he decides to call her beautiful. Hazel is not interested in any relationships and Augustus is pushing it upon her. Even after the first interaction, Augustus continues to be overly friendly with Hazel to please her. He does numerous things to showcase his friendliness like dropping flowers over to her house and starting to pick her up from school. He goes out of his way to make the effort in getting her. This is one of the survival signals that De Becker mentions in his book because this can be seen as ââ¬Å"someone trying to charm herâ⬠rather than that person being charming. Although Augustus had no bad intentions towards her, since he was trying to be very friendly it could seem that he is trying to force on an expression which he does not have already.
